Hong Kong Gap Year

Helping in Church Schools

In 2004 the parents of one of the Anglican Kindergarten Schools in Hong Kong asked if a person could be found who would help their children improve their English. Following this request a scheme was started where Native English Speaking young people in the United Kingdom would be invited to spend a year in Kindergarten and Primary Schools in Hong Kong working as classroom assistants helping children improve their English.

It was hoped that those who came to the various schools would also take part in the life of the local Church and in particular in the various activities organised for young people.

Between 2005 and 2011 59 young people went to Hong Kong to work in 8 different schools. 31 of these had just completed their 'A' levels and were spending a Gap year in Hong Kong before going to University while 18 had recently graduated from University.

Between 2005 and 2011 8 of the people who went to Hong Kong subsequently returned to Hong Kong after their Gap year to work as “Native English Teachers.” A further 5 young people decided to spend a second year in Hong Kong working as Teaching Assistants. On the 'down side' however, 7 young people returned home without completing the full year - this was for various reasons such as health, incompatibility, educational needs and various personal reasons.

Those who go to Hong Kong must be Native English Speakers for whom English is their first language. They will be supported in their work by the staff of the English Departments of the schools in which they work. In some schools they will be supported by a Native English Teacher.
